In our work here in the Dominican Republic, we’ve seen firsthand how broken systems limit opportunities for those who need help the most, keeping them trapped in cycles of poverty. Whether political, economic, or cultural, these systems create barriers that are often beyond our control but profoundly impact the lives of the people we serve.

Take the political situation in Haiti, for example. Many families have sought refuge in the Dominican Republic, hoping to build a better life. Yet, when they arrive, they face new challenges—chiefly, the lack of proper documentation. Without the right papers, it’s nearly impossible to secure good jobs or pursue higher education. This issue hits especially hard for young adults who have grown up in our programs. Many of them have worked tirelessly to gain the skills they need, attending college and preparing for professional careers. However, with government offices in Haiti closed, they are unable to obtain the necessary documents, meaning their hard-earned degrees remain unused. It’s heartbreaking to witness their struggle, and though we’re doing all we can to help, the system is painfully slow to change.

Cultural challenges present another set of obstacles. We’ve encountered situations where deep-rooted beliefs—such as witchcraft—lead people to reject medical advice, putting their health at risk. In some cases, young people are expected to start working or marry at a young age, cutting short their education and limiting their potential to break free from poverty.

These are just a few examples of the broken systems we face every day. They are complex, deep-rooted, and often seem impossible to fix. But even in the midst of such overwhelming challenges, we’ve seen that God is a God of restoration. He is not limited by man-made systems, and we have witnessed firsthand the miracles that happen when He intervenes in what seem like hopeless situations.

Whether it’s helping someone obtain the legal documents they need or seeing a young person break free from cultural expectations to pursue their education, we are reminded that nothing is too difficult for God. Every success story we witness reinforces our belief that change is possible when we seek His guidance and intervention.

Our work has taught us that while we may not be able to fix these broken systems on our own, we can be instruments of God’s love and justice within them. By providing support, advocating for change, and, most importantly, relying on God’s power, we can make a difference—one life at a time. We’ve seen how even the smallest act of support, coupled with prayer, can open doors and transform lives.

That’s why our motto at Sociedad Lucas is “Serving People in Jesus.” We know that only Jesus can bring lasting change to these situations. His love empowers us to keep going, even when the systems seem unmovable. Because in Him, the impossible becomes possible.

How You Can Get Involved:

  • Pray: Ask God to intervene in the broken systems that trap people in poverty. Pray for the individuals and families we serve, especially those facing challenges with documentation and cultural expectations.
  • Support: Your financial support helps us continue providing educational, medical, and legal assistance to those in need.
  • Advocate: Raise awareness about these systemic issues and how they affect vulnerable communities. Together, we can work toward long-term solutions.

We believe that through Jesus, there is hope for restoration. With your prayers and support, we can continue to serve as instruments of His love, bringing justice and opportunity to those who need it most.
